Marco Alcaraz, a 15-year employee at Sun Mar’s Garden Park Care Center in Garden Grove, CA, was one of two winners to take home a brand new Ford EcoSport vehicle in January.

Providers across the country are getting creative in order to boost COVID-19 vaccination rates among staff. Some have promoted cash prizes, while others have promised extra time off.

California-based operator Sun Mar Healthcare is raffling off two new Chevy Trailblazers as prizes for qualified employees who get vaccinated against COVID-19. The operator, which has more than 7,000 employees, is seeking to reach a 100% staff vaccination rate and is hoping to meet the benchmark today.

“We have nearly a 95% vaccination rate company-wide and feel like we could make that last 5% a little more fun by giving away a couple cars,” Sun Mar owner Frank Johnson said.

The operator plans to award one car to a facility employee in Northern California and another in the southern part of the state. Other prizes up for grabs from vaccinated employees include up to $500 and a free food truck luncheon.

This is the company’s third vehicle giveaway in nine months. Sun Mar in December gifted two of its certified nursing assistants with brand new cars during last year’s holiday season, and raffled off two more in January to workers.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Sun Mar Healthcare has continued its commitment to protecting employees and patients,” the company said in a statement. “However, as the epidemic has stretched on, the company feels it is not enough to just protect its dedicated staff workers: It must celebrate them as well.”
