CarexTech’s SMILE program has been implemented in close to 500 senior living communities, with the company promoting that it can increase caregiver-family-resident engagement by 80% or higher within three to four months of implementation.

SMILE debuted three years ago with a portal for “true engagement,” the company said. The communities have more than 28,000 residents.

In addition to activity planning, SMILE uses data analytics to help users increase program offerings that attract residents.

A private portal allows personal information between families and caregivers. Caregivers are encouraged to use a family’s insights to give more personalized treatment, activities, and wellness care to each resident.

“Our understanding of the importance of the ‘human touch’ for long-term care of senior adults and our own personal experiences with our aging parents inspired us to develop SMILE,” said Sarv Devaraj, Ph.D., Duda Chair Professor of Management at the University of Notre Dame and company co-founder. “Evidence suggests that engaged family members can offer triple value — improved quality of life for residents, less stress for caregivers, and greater satisfaction for families — all of which are measurable.”

SMILE is HIPAA-compliant and can integrate with EHR platforms, including integration last year with PointClickCare.
