A private room in a nursing home costs an average of $96 daily in Shreveport, LA, making it the least expensive city in the nation, according to a study by the MetLife Mature Market Institute for AARP Health Care Options.

The national private cost is $181 per day, the study said, while the average nursing home stay is 2.4 years.
 
The next least expensive cities, according to the study, are Little Rock, AR ($117 per day), Kansas City, MO ($121), and Birmingham, AL ($123). Rounding out the top ten were Jackson, MS ($124), Wichita, KS ($127.43), Dell Rapids, SD ($127.60), New Orleans, LA ($128.65), St. Louis, MO ($133.21) and Charleston, SC ($135.50).
