Magellan Rx Management, a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM), in partnership with Zipline, a drone technology provider, will start air-dropping prescriptions, including specialty medications used to treat chronic conditions, according to Chain Store Age

Magellan Rx will be the first pharmacy benefits manager to use Zipline to deliver medications in this manner to patients’ homes, the news outlet said. Magellan Rx members in North Carolina are slated to be to take advantage of this service initially; operations are projected to start in 2022, pending Federal Aviation Administration approval.

In the fall of 2020, Zipline launched a similar drone prescription delivery service with Walmart. CVS and UPS also are offering delivery of prescription drugs via drone to the nation’s largest retirement community, located in Florida, the news outlet said.
