The list of companies and products affected by the peanut butter recall continues to grow as the Food and Drug Administration zeroes in on the source of the outbreak-a food manufacturer that supplies peanut products to long-term care facilities, hospitals and other institutions.
A plant in Blakely, GA, which is owned by Peanut Corp. of America, is the reported source of the outbreak. It has caused 470 illnesses and six deaths in 43 states and Canada. Last week’s recall of King Nut and Parnell’s Pride peanut butter (McKnight’s, 1/13) has expanded to include: Clif and Lund brand bars made with peanut butter; ZonePerfect Chocolate Peanut Butter bars; Larabar Peanut Butter Cookie snack bars and JamFrakas Peanut Butter Blisscrisp snack bars; Keebler cheese and peanut butter sandwich crackers; and Keebler and Famous Amos peanut butter cookies.
While FDA officials have said that the peanut butter on store shelves is safe, bulk jars of peanut butter, such as those sold to nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, are suspect.
