Gov. Thomas Vilsack vetoed legislation in Iowa that would have capped non-economic damages in medical liability lawsuits at $250,000. Though he encourages studies on the matter, Gov. Vilsack said such a cap would not greatly reduce costs or increase the availability of medical liability insurance.

Greg Boattenhamer, senior vice president of government relations at the Iowa Hospital Association, said the association worked hard to make sure the bill was passed.

The association is meeting with Gov. Vilsack today to continue the discussion.
