Senators backing a major immigration reform bill scored a big win Tuesday when they gathered enough support to ensure the controversial proposal will come up for a vote soon. The 64-35 vote easily surpassed the 60-vote threshold.
The action leads the way to reopened debate on amendments to the bill, which long-term care providers support. Among other provisions, the legislation creates a “guest worker” program and generally makes it easier for foreign-born workers to legally enter the U.S. workforce.
The bill’s opponents, which include many Republicans and a traditional enemy – organized labor, criticize the measure for granting “amnesty” to illegal aliens. A vote on the bill could come later this week, observers said.
