The House Budget Committee Thursday approved a fiscal year 2008 budget resolution that does not include billions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid cuts as proposed by President Bush.
It also, by contrast, exceeds by more than $24 billion the amount President Bush requested for discretionary spending. The $2.9 trillion resolution would provide additional funds for mental healthcare for veterans and research on traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.
Congressmen plan to vote on the bill next week. Senators this week have been voting on amendments to their budget resolution. Bush’s budget contained more than $70 billion in savings from Medicare and Medicaid over five years.
