The Department of Housing and Urban Development is rolling back cuts it had intended for the program that helps the poor pay rent.
More than $150 million is being put back in play after HUD officials reviewed public housing authorities’ appeals regarding Section 8 voucher financing. Nearly 400 authorities appealed, and 379 of them will see the restored funding.
“Old and disabled people had the scare of their lives wondering if they would be evicted,” said Sunia Zaterman, executive director of the Council for Large Public Housing Agencies, according to a published report.
Cutbacks in the $13 billion program were triggered when President Bush signed the budget in January.
