Feds change ‘onerous’ rules

Long-term care facilities that are undergoing a major renovation or are in the process of building a new structure may be eligible for a sprinkler system extension.

A rule proposed by regulators with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in February began allowing certain nursing homes to receive extensions past the federal sprinkler installation deadline of Aug. 13, 2013.

In addition to the sprinkler waiver, the rule proposed changes identified as onerous for some providers such as rural clinics. The reduced regulatory burden mentioned in the rule would save $3.4 billion in healthcare costs over five years, according to CMS estimates.
