Members of eight AFL-CIO unions representing nearly 200,000 of the nation’s nurses have announced they will band together to increase their political and organizing clout.

The group — called RNs Working Together — is planning to unite to become the first union member collection to form a coalition within the AFL-CIO. The coalition said it plans to address problems specific to the nurses’ workplace, including issues of healthcare quality.

The eight unions in the alliance are United American Nurses, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the American Federation of Teachers, the Communications Workers of America, the American Federation of Government Employees, United Steelworkers, the Office and Professional Employees International Union and the United Auto Workers.
