Tami Pruitt, a long-term care registered dietitian, recently became the first in her profession to become Nutrition Wound Care Certified, according to an announcement.

Pruitt, of St. Joseph, MI, gained that designation from the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy, a nonprofit credentialing board that focuses on the advancement of wound care. This new designation is offered by NAWCO to registered dietitians and dietitian nutritionists who are directly involved in skin and wound management, according to a press release.

The nutritionist can serve as a “key member” on the wound care team, lending his or her understanding of “both the underlying causes of wounds and how to support the patient with proper nutritional plans based on their needs,” according to the release.

“After talking with a fellow worker, I decided to pursue this certification to advance my understanding and competency in wound care from a nutritional perspective,” Pruitt said. “I learned so much and now have the knowledge to support the wound care team with proper nutritional interventions. I am also grateful for the recognition and respect of the nurses and physicians on our team.”
