An expert panel has issued new guidelines for the use of silver collagen oxidized regenerated cellulose dressings in conjunction with negative pressure wound therapy.

Seven experts in wound care, plastic surgery, nursing and podiatric surgery conducted a lengthy process that included surveying others who have extensive experience with silver collagen ORC dressings and NPWT within their own practices. Together, the group considered where and when the combined approach would be most effective.

“Wound care is increasingly being performed in clinical settings outside the traditional hospital-based wound care clinic,” said the consensus report in the August issue of Wounds.

Panel members recommended use of both tools together in nursing homes, outpatient offices, home health and acute care. They also found the combined treatment was an appropriate adjunct therapy for diabetic ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, traumatic wounds and  surgical wounds. Five additional consensus statements are included in the full article.
