The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services last week issued a final rule that sets up a pay-for-performance program for dialysis facilities.

This rule, which affects dialysis centers, puts in place performance standards, scoring methodology, and payment reductions of up to 2% at facilities’ whose performance is not in line with the standards. Increasingly, long-term care facilities are opening dialysis wings. The rule becomes effective Feb. 4.

Eligible facilities will be evaluated based on their performance in 2010. Payment adjustments will be applied to Medicare in 2012. Once facilities are evaluated, providers will be allowed to review scores and payment changes before they are reported publicly.
