The Wall Street Journal reported that President Bush is ready to nominate Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Mark McClellan as the next Centers for Medicare & Medicaid administrator. McClellan, who was a top healthcare advisor to Bush before his post at the FDA, might replace Tom Scully, who left in December to join Atlanta-based law firm Alston & Bird in its Washington D.C. office.
McClellan said at a public Washington event, avoiding the question as to whether the journal report is true, “I’m focusing on doing the best job I can at the FDA.”
McClellan, a physician with a doctorate in economics, would likely win Senate confirmation for the CMS administrator position, but he could face challenges because of his opposition to prescription drug reimportation, the Journal reports.
