Two people are reported to be in critical but stable condition after an attempted murder-suicide at a California skilled nursing facility, according to local reports.

Officials in Alameda, CA say an 85-year-old man shot an 85-year-old woman who was a resident at Crown Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center inside the facility last Tuesday before turning the gun on himself. Both have regained consciousness and are expected to survive, SFGate.com reported.

While authorities did not release the names of victim and the shooter, or how they were related, Alameda police lieutenant Wayland Gee told the East Bay Times that it’s believed the man shot the woman to “ease her pain and suffering.” Investigators are reportedly considering filing criminal charges in the incident.

The administrator of Crown Bay declined to comment to local news outlets, citing the patient’s privacy and the ongoing investigation.
