President Bush must consider the big picture and not forget about Medicare and Medicaid in his goal to “fix” what’s wrong with our nation’s retirement system, according to Hal Daub, president and CEO of the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living.

In a formal written response to the President’s State of the Union Address last week, Daub emphasized that the retirement security of American seniors is not just about Social Security reform, but also about strengthening the nation’s long-term care financing structure through its funding commitments to Medicare and Medicaid.

Daub urged the President and Congress to provide the necessary resources to ensure that the seniors of today, as well as those of the future, have the best care possible. The federal government has a responsibility to ensure that U.S. long-term care providers can maintain and sustain care quality improvements for the long term, Daub said.
