While artificial hip replacements are designed to last multiple years, that is not always what happens. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 patients receiving a total joint replacement need early replacement surgery — a procedure that can cause serious complications for elderly patients. To help reduce these incidents, engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new implant coating that creates better adhesion. The result is less premature failure.
