A lawsuit against a Virginia nursing home over a resident’s leg amputation will be heard by a jury in early 2016.
Mary Sherrod, a resident at Sentara Live Care in Norfolk, fell out of bed during a sponge bath in March 2014, according to court records. The family said this caused fractures to her legs, ankles, feet and shoulder that led to severe sores. Her right leg was amputated in July 2014, according to the lawsuit.
Sherrod’s family claims the facility’s negligent administration, lack of staff and lack of supplies led to the fall and subsequent amputation. Sherrod’s granddaughter said she had to bring her own bandages to the facility for dressing her wounds on “at least one occasion.”
Sherrod’s family is seeking $4 million in damages, in addition to prejudgment interest and the costs of the action, the suit states.
In a statement to 13News Now, Sentara spokesman Dale Gauding said the company could not comment due to pending litigation and privacy laws.
