Newsweek, in partnership with The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit that evaluates healthcare quality, kicking off a new healthcare ratings series with a look at the nation’s best infection prevention products.
The list was built using publicly available data, including information submitted by healthcare facilities to the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and Leapfrog Ambulatory Surgery Center Survey, with teams of experts and analysts reviewing data and identifying high performers.
Among the best performers in seven candidates are:
- Ecolab’s Hand Hygiene Compliance Monitoring System, MedSense Clear, Gojo’s Purell Smartlink, SC Johnson’ DebMed and nGage Hand Hygiene Compliance by Proventix in the monitoring category;
- Proventix’s nDemic system and Aqua Tools In the infection control technology category;
- Surfacide’s Helios, Xenex’s pulsed xenon robot, Applied Medicine’s Alexis Protectors and Systems and PDI’s Tru-D Smart UVC in the UV disinfection and lighting devices category;
- Poiesis Medical’s Duette, a dual-balloon closed urinary drainage system, in the catheter and central line category;
- 3M’s Clean Trace, Spartan Chemical’s Diffense, and the Halo Mist system in the disinfectant solutions and cleaning disinfectants category.
Candidates were judged on effectiveness, safety to patients and healthcare workers, successful real-world implementation, and the stability of the company. Newsweek also considered Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency reviews and published research studies in its analysis.
