Members of the Senate Finance Committee urged Kerry Weems, who has been nominated to head the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, to repair problems within the Medicare program.

Committee members, including Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) and ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-IA), said they disapprove of the agency’s delayed responses to information requests, specifically regarding Medicare Part D premium deduction problems. They also said they would like Weems, if he is chosen, to improve the agency’s relationship with Congress.

The committee last week held a hearing to consider Weems, a 24-year veteran of the Department of Health and Human Services, for administrator of CMS. Weems told the committee he would fix the information delay and improve program oversight.
