MASSACHUSETTS — A majority of voters are in favor of a ballot initiative that would increase Medicaid funding for nursing homes in Massachusetts.

In a poll of more than 1,200 registered voters, the Massachusetts Senior Care Association found that 76% likely would support a ballot measure to update funding for the providers. After hearing arguments for both sides, 72% said they were in favor of the effort.

State lawmakers are considering a proposal that would change how the state establishes reimbursement rates in an effort to boost fundings for nursing homes.

If lawmakers don’t act on the proposal, advocates are working to place the initiative on the November ballot.

A majority of poll respondents also said they believe lack of state funding for providers has a negative impact on the quality of care and they would support legislation to increase wages for direct care workers.

According to the Massachusetts Senior Care Association, 20 nursing homes have closed in the state within the last 18 months.
