Teaching elderly how to balance may help cut their risk of falls and related injuries, Canadian researchers say.

While other forms of exercise are beneficial to the health of older adults, special training to give them better balance control may be essential to prevent falls, a study by doctors at the University of Toronto finds.

Researchers developed a perturbation-based balance training program. Elderly participants learned how to regain their balance or to grasp a support when their center of gravity was challenged. The study was published online in BMC Geriatrics.
