Proponents of immigration reform scored a legislative victory on Tuesday.
The Senate, which is hammering away at a new immigration, bill, voted to keep a provision that would allow 400,000 to 600,000 temporary foreign workers to enter the United States each year on two-year visas. Nursing homes, among other industries, have complained that they need foreign workers to fill jobs that Americans don’t seem to want.
Still, the bill faces a battle as lawmakers on both sides reconcile another major aspect of the bill: offering legal status to some 12 million immigrants in the country.
