A National Institute on Aging $3.5 million grant will be used to test an app related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Indiana University School of Medicine, Regenstrief Institute and Purdue University, led by Richard Holden, Ph.D., are testing Brain Safe, an app designed to help people reduce their exposure to a common class of drugs linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

The app can be used by older adults who take anticholinergics, with a goal of helping users talk to their physicians about replacing these medications. The app includes a personalized risk calculator, targeted multimedia content and a conversation starter.

Anticholinergics have been linked to cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. One in three older adults is prescribed one of these medications but may not be aware of the possible risks, executives said.
