More consumers are willing to pay for well-maintained restrooms, according to a new survey.

The number of people who said they would “definitely” or “probably” spend more money has hit 52% this year, according to the 10th Annual Healthy Hand Washing Survey by Bradley Corp.

For senior care providers, a messy public restroom can drive away prospects. Clean restrooms are so desirable that 1 in 3 Americans say they’d pay to use a restroom if they were assured it was clean and well-stocked, the company said.

“When a customer encounters a messy restroom, their perception of that business and its products and services are tarnished.said Jon Dommisse, director of strategy and corporate development for Bradley Corp.

Of note in the survey is the function use of public restrooms beyond the necessities. Around half of adults use the restroom to check their appearance, while 40% use them to blow their nose or cough. A fourth said they use their smartphone in restrooms, with similar amounts will use a restroom as a way to avoid someone.
