Many middle-income families struggle to pay for medical care, a new report finds.

Almost half of adults in families earning $35,000 to $49,999 a year had problems paying medical bills in the past two years, according to a Commonwealth Fund report. Roughly the same number said they had a hard time affording health insurance. The telephone survey was conducted with 1,023 adults in June.

Among families with higher incomes – $50,000 to $74,999 annually – 33% found it difficult to pay medical bills and 35% struggled to pay for insurance. Nearly half of those surveyed feared being unable to afford medical bills in the event of a serious illness.
