The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging disagrees with a new report’s claims that many long-term care facilities are neglecting their elderly and disabled residents.
“The examples cited in Faces of Neglect are extreme cases and not representative of what occurs daily in nursing homes,” said Larry Minnix, president and CEO of AAHSA.
The report, “Faces of Neglect: Behind Closed Doors,” traces the experiences of 36 people who suffered abuse at the hands of long-term care providers. The National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform released the report Friday in Washington. Alice H. Hedt, executive director of the coalition, was one of the presenters of the report.
Approximately 1.7 million people are served in the nation’s nearly 17,000 nursing homes each year.
