More arrests are likely as a result of investigations into deaths at nursing homes and hospitals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana attorney general’s office says.
Allegations include patients being abandoned, evacuated improperly or euthanized to save them from suffering while waiting for rescuers, the office said.
Six hospitals and 13 nursing homes are under investigation. The most well known criminal case involved the husband and wife owners of St. Rita’s nursing facility in St. Bernard Parish. They were charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide. Thirty-four residents were found dead days after the storm hit. (Published on 10-25-05)
