The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services plans to launch a Medicaid pay-for-performance initiative in which it will call attention to programs in several states as models for the rest of the country.

CMS said it hopes to begin mapping out the initiative next month. It could produce a plan for the program within several months, according to Terris A. King, deputy director of the agency’s Office of Clinical Standards and Quality. Medicaid, a federal and state program, pays for the majority of nursing home care.

About a half dozen states have developed so-called P4P programs for Medicaid providers. Programs in California, Nebraska and Vermont are likely to be considered as benchmarks. CMS has already launched P4P programs for Medicare. Congress is currently considering legislation to expand the scope of these programs.
