Oral nutritional supplements may be able to prevent disease-related malnutrition in institutionalized or community-dwelling older adults, according to a new analysis published in the JAMDA: The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. DRM is often a cause of frailty and is tied to worsening clinical indicators, and institutionalized older adults have higher rates.

The supplements helped decrease in-hospital admissions and medical visits, according to European researchers.

One investigator concluded that “a nutritional intervention in malnourished in-patient adults older than 60 implemented for 3 months improves functional limitations with neutral costs,” they wrote.
