A 61-year-old resident of a Texas skilled nursing facility and her son died of gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide Thursday morning.

Authorities say Beverly Hatfield was shot in the head by her son, 31-year-old Tyler Hatfield,  inside her room at The Crescent nursing home in Sugar Land, Texas. He then allegedly turned the gun on himself. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Beverly was admitted to The Crescent less than a month ago and had been in a vegetative state, police told Houston NBC affiliate KPRC. Police added that there was no history of violence between the two, and that Tyler visited his mother regularly and had been “very attentive” to her healthcare situation.

KPRC reported that another resident of the facility suffered a heart attack shortly after the shooting, but it was unclear whether the two events were related.
