Some providers were heartened last week after the Bush administration decided to back away from a plan that some observers said would have forced many elderly and disabled who use government vouchers to pay more of their own housing costs.
Lawmakers and housing advocates had asked the Housing and Urban Development Department to rethink a proposal to adjust a rent formula that, they feared, would have made things tougher on those who use vouchers.
While some of HUD’s proposed changes will take effect, the agency will not use boundary line revisions for many metropolitan areas in calculating “fair rent” levels. As a result, the fair rent values in many areas will not be lowered.
