A Boston-based study of 152 nursing home residents with advanced dementia found about 20% harbor strains of drug-resistant bacteria.
This is because they are often rehospitalized and are prescribed heavy antibiotics, according to researchers. More than 10% of those infected had drug-resistant bacteria that can’t be killed by four or more antibiotic classes.
Drug-resistant Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Proteus mirabilis (P.mirabilis) were the most common bacteria found in residents.
Results were in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.
