Providers filing electronic Medicare claims that don’t meet standards of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements are going to have to start waiting longer for payment starting today.
A HIPAA contingency plan that called for a July 1 deadline was allowed to slide until today. But now those not in compliance with electronic filing guidelines will be treated like paper-filers, and thus have to wait 13 extra days for payment action.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the contingency plan in February. A listing of Medicare fiscal intermediaries for those need help can be found at cms.hhs.gov/contacts/incardir.asp.
