More than 85% of American older than 45 years old do not have long-term insurance, according to a second annual survey released by the Long-Term Care Financing Strategy Group, Washington D.C. The study, entitled “Index of Long-Term Care Uninsured,” shows the number, at 82 million, has not changed since last year’s study.
The study reveals that approximately 16% of those aged 65 and over have private long-term care insurance. Reform advocates generally feel that the overall long-term care funding picture would be vastly improved if more people bought private long-term care insurance.
The Index numbers are based on Census data, Medicaid program numbers and private insurance sources.
The Long-Term Care Financing Strategy Group is a non-profit, non-partisan think tank affiliated with MetLife and the American Health Care Association.
