The General Accounting Office has reopened its investigation into the Department of Health and Human Services’ promotion of the new Medicare reform law amid news reports that the agency sent out deceptive “video news releases.” The video news releases are allegedly actors playing journalists.

An HHS spokesman said video news releases are widely used by government agencies and critics are seemingly trying to derail the law.

A GAO spokesman said the agency is resuming the investigation on its own. There has been no stated timeline.

Last week, the GAO completed an investigation at the request of the Democrats and determined the agency’s advertisements and brochures on the new Medicare reform law were misleading but not illegal.
