University of Pittsburgh researchers are developing a Breathalyzer than can detect and possibly monitor diabetes. People with the condition often notice a “fruity” odor in their breath, which tends to become stronger as glucose levels rise. The Pitt team is targeting this biomarker as a potential diagnostic tool. Currently available monitoring devices mostly work by analyzing glucose levels, and require a finger prick. A less-invasive alternative would be welcomed by many residents and caregivers. Full findings appear in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
