Medicaid Recovery Audit Contractors will not be replacing existing program integrity contractors, according to new guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Medicaid Integrity Contractors (MICs) offer different services than the recovery contractors, according to a frequently asked questions document released by CMS.
While both groups should be identifying overpayments and reviewing claims, one difference is that MICs can give information on regional and national fraud trends, the document says.
CMS also offered guidance on how states can prepare Medicaid providers for the audits. Recommendations include providing the name and contact information of the RAC vendor and work on identifying overpayments and underpayments.
