Providers need to make it easier for nurses to disclose errors that are committed in nursing homes, according to researchers of a unique study.
Reporting and disclosure should be “less difficult for nurses,” said Laura M. Wagner, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, assistant professor of nursing at New York University College of Nursing. She and colleagues examined mailed survey responses from 1,180 registered nurses and registered practical nurses in Ontario.
Researchers pointed out that despite increased attention given to the reporting of harmful errors, almost one-third of the respondents said they would be less likely to disclose if they believed they might be sued or reprimanded.
Respondents called current support efforts and education of nurses who might report errors inadequate.
