A newly released statistical analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that black nursing home residents typically have a lower functional status than residents of other races.
The analysis uses data from the 2004 National Nursing Home Survey, the latest survey available. Based on that information, black residents were more likely to be totally dependent in both eating and toileting and to be totally dependent in all five activities of daily living (ADL), CDC researchers found. After adjusting for age and gender, researchers say 59% of black residents were completely dependent in all five ADLs, compared with 51% of residents of other races. Also, black residents were more likely to be incontinent, and less likely to have a toileting plan than residents of other races.
These data identify important differences in the needs and care of black nursing home residents nationally, the report authors write. Go here for more information.
