As time winds down on the president’s tenure, U.S. Representative Debbie Schultz (D-FL) has begun to build support for universal healthcare.

Schultz, along with 20 other representatives, reintroduced a version of the Healthy Americans Act to the House on Wednesday, hoping to pave the way for serious healthcare reform when the next president takes office. Among its many provisions, the bill would provide broader access to long-term care coverage, help eliminate the coverage gap in Medicare Part D and form a program designed to help treat five of the most serious chronic health conditions faced by Medicare beneficiaries.

The bill would also essentially put an end to Medicaid. Since it would require health plans to be purchased by all Americans, the low-income health subsidy would no longer be required. The bill is similar to last year’s H.R. 3163 and S. 334, the full text of which can be found at http://thomas.loc.gov.
