A New York skilled nursing facility had hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds and hundreds …) of reasons to celebrate resident birthdays recently.
Seven residents reached the 100-year milestone and were feted with a big birthday celebration in late March. The Grand Pavilion for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Rockville Centre, NY, hosted the 1920s-themed party — in honor of the decade when the residents were born. Staff, family and friends honored Viola Nowaki, 103; Gloria Hunt, 101; Rose Curti, 101; Ms. Marjorie, 101; Marie Gula, 100; Nieves Gonzalez, 100; and Ruth Cook, 100. The event featured live entertainment and a 1920s-themed photo booth.
“Our residents have lived such rich, beautiful lives and it is our pleasure to celebrate them, and how much they mean to us,” administrator Dimitry Schwartz said.
The guests of honor also shared their secrets to a long and happy life during the party. The key is “to dance,” along with no smoking or drinking, Hunt said. Meanwhile, Curti advised making sure to pamper oneself with things such as manicures.
“Look in the mirror every day, and say the words, ‘I am beautiful,’” added Ms. Marjorie. “Saying those words works your facial muscles so you don’t get wrinkles!”
