Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman drew fire Wednesday after proposing to wear adult diapers to better understand the plight of nursing home residents in the Canadian province.
The suggestion drew some harsh words from lawmakers, who called it a sideshow that distracts from the issue of improving care in nursing homes. Sid Ryan, president of the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents nursing home workers, accused the minister of playing “silly games.”
Smitherman explained that his proposal was a legitimate way to understand the complaints regarding poor care to make the right policy.
