U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released a list of acceptable credentials that companies can use to verify the employment eligibility of new hires.

Employers may now accept the following documents under “List A” of Form I-9: U.S. passport, permanent resident card or alien registration receipt card, an unexpired foreign passport with a temporary I-551 stamp, an unexpired Employment Authorization Document that contains a photograph, and an unexpired foreign passport with an unexpired “Arrival-Departure Record.”

Employers no longer can accept the following under “List A”: a certificate of U.S. citizenship, certificate of naturalization, an alien registration receipt, an unexpired re-entry permit, and an unexpired refugee travel document. Nursing homes, which employ many immigrants, increasingly are becoming concerned as the government cracks down on employees of illegal status.
